Korean terminology for frailty
Won Chang-Won

Abstract
Background: ¡°Frailty" in geriatrics is thought to encompass a variety of phenotypes that are not fully explained by current definitions of disease or disability. In Korea, "frail" has been translated with various meanings and terminology; e.g., for weakness, for senescence, for care needed, for vulnerable, and for functional impairement. None of them seems to fully represent the frailty as geriatric syndrome. Among Asian countries using Chinese characters, frailty is also being used with different terminology and also nothing seems to represent the frailty. It suggests some linguistic differences from western countries.
